After showing you how to unlock your iPhone 7 in our earlier post, I gonna show you how to check if your iPhone is locked or unlocked? Well, there is a possibility that your new Apple iPhone (be it an iPhone 5 or iPhone X) is carrier locked. Especially If you aren’t paying full price for it. It is a common practice in use by cellular networks. They sell you an Apple iPhone that is not unlocked at monthly installments.
This makes sure that for the duration of those installments, your device is locked to only work on their network. Apple iPhone devices have the same thing going for them. After all, not a whole lot of people can instantly shell out $1000 for an iPhone X. The carrier lock is implemented not from Apple’s side but the company where you are purchasing the iPhone from as part of a contract plan.
During the contract, usually around 20 months, you are unable to unlock your iPhone. Therefore, you cannot use it on other networks without breaching the contract. So how do you tell if an iPhone you have just purchased is locked or unlocked? Currently, there is no way to be sure of that by just looking at your iPhone’s outer appearance. We have listed a number of ways for how to check if your iPhone is unlocked or not.
Methods to Check if iPhone is Unlocked
As mentioned above, the iPhone you pay full price for is usually unlocked. It can work on any network. Whereas the locked device only works on the network you have a contract with and pay a monthly fee which covers the cost of your iPhone. To check whether your iPhone is unlocked or not, check out the methods given below. You can use these methods to check if your iPhone 6 or iPhone 7 is unlocked or not.
How to Check if iPhone is Unlocked – Supported Devices:
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8 / 8 Plus
- iPhone 7 / 7 Plus
- iPhone 6 (S) / 6 (S) Plus
- iPhone 5S / 5C / 5
- iPhone 4S / 4
Method 1: How to tell if iPhone is unlocked via iPhone Settings
Method accuracy: 65%
This is the easiest method and simply involves you checking out the Settings app on your iPhone. If you are, follow the guide here on how to tell if your iPhone is unlocked or not
- Open Settings app
- Go to “Cellular” then “Cellular Data Options“
- Check for the presence of “Cellular Data Network“. This option should not appear on locked iPhones, seeing this option then most likely your iPhone is unlocked.
Method 2: How to know if iPhone is unlocked using SIM Card
Method accuracy: 100%
You can check if your iPhone is locked or not by using another SIM from a different carrier. So try using that to call someone and see if the connection goes through.
- Power off the iPhone using Sleep Button and then the Slide to Power Off option
- Use a paper clip to eject the SIM card from your iPhone
- Insert the SIM card you have into the SIM tray and power up your iPhone
- Try making a call from your iPhone with the new SIM card to see if the connection goes through
In case you are unable to call with the other SIM card you inserted, it means that your iPhone is locked 100% to a specific carrier and might need to use iPhone unlock service to remove your iPhone lock.
Method 3: How to tell if iPhone is unlocked using iPhone IMEI Checker
To see if your iPhone is unlocked, you can use your iPhone IMEI number. Just use the IMEI check service. It will tell you if your iPhone is locked or unlocked. This method might cost you a bit but the results are always accurate. If you just bought a used iPhone and it doesn’t seem to be working, it might be worth it to give this method a go.
Simply look for an IMEI check company and give them the details of your purchase and your iPhone IMEI and they will be able to return to you with detailed status of your iPhone (within few hours) and confirm whether your iPhone is carrier locked or not. The IMEI status report will also tell you which network your iPhone is locked to.
Step 1: Use this IMEI Check service (trusted and recommended)
Step 2: Insert your iPhone IMEI (here’s how to get your iPhone IMEI)
Step 3: Completed your order and wait for your iPhone report. Done!
Whichever of these methods to check if your iPhone is unlocked or not works for you, the end result will be the same. If the iPhone is unlocked, you can continue to use it for however long you feel like but if it is locked, you might have to contact the carrier if you bought a used phone from a third party. It is also possible that the carrier will require you to pay up for the rest of the duration of the contract if you want to unlock the phone. Therefore using iPhone IMEI unlock service would be the best scenario for you.
